Your goal in this first step should be to find a topic that actually interests you.  Research projects are long, multi-step processes, and you don't want to get bored by your chosen topic!  Try to connect to your own experiences, previous knowledge, or general curiosity about different subjects.  A fun place to start looking at topics is Curiosity.com.  This site is pack full of interesting facts, phenomenons, inventions, behaviors, and more.
TIP: When picking your topic, consider your audience.  Writers write with a real audience in mind!
